Youth DiverseCity Writing Group Needs Mentors
The CWC, in conjunction with Sorenson Clubhouse, is opening a YDWS group for youth ages 10-17. This is a great group to mentor; they are an engaged group of teens with deep insights into the daily issues of social justice in their lives. For more information on the Sorenson Clubhouse visit: www.slcgov.com/clubhouse
Meeting times:
2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month from 6-8 p.m.
If you are interested in mentoring for either of these groups, please write Andrea Malouf for details at andrea.malouf@slcc.edu.

Will the waiting pay off? Yes it will
Please know that although you may not feel as though you are doing much just sitting there waiting for writers to show up for assistance, your very presence is advertising the CWC and our programs. In the end, that is nearly as valuable as helping a writer.
We would like to commend the tremendous dedication of our Off-Site Writing Coaches: Chrystine Lee, Kevin White, Steven Duncan, Jerry Puckett, John Robinson, Paige Mehlhoff, Steven Warren, Carl Yutrzenka, Sheri Bell-Rehwoldt, Helen Radkey, MaryJane VanBurn, Holly Welker and Dylan Winslow.
If you would like to become an Off-Site Writing Coach we currently have two positions open.
More Details.

Renew America Together
Yesterday the SLCC Community Writing Center took part in the National Day of Service, celebrating the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Answering the challenge of President Obama to help “Renew America Together,” volunteers attended a one-hour orientation to familiarize themselves with the methods used by the CWC to support, motivate and educate people of all abilities and educational backgrounds who want to use writing for practical needs, civic engagement and personal expression. These volunteers are now contacting non-profit organizations, government agencies, businesses and educational institutions in an effort to create ongoing Writing Partnerships.
Volunteers are encouraged to let each other know who they have contacted over the Inauguration week, and how their meetings went. You may get a chance to read about these meetings in the comments section below.
All together, after two orientation sessions, over 20 volunteers took the opportunity to participate in the Renew America Together: Writing for Empowerment event. Many of the volunteers will be continuing their service to the community, becoming trained volunteers in the CWC Writing Coaching and DiverseCity Writing Series programs.
If you were unable to participate in Renew America Together with the CWC, you can still help us continue to meet this challenge. If you have been a volunteer, are currently a volunteer, or are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact the SLCC Community Writing Center at 801.957.4992 to take part in developing ongoing Writing Partnerships in the Salt Lake community.
If you are interested in becoming an ongoing volunteer, the next Volunteer Training will take place on Saturday, January 31 from 12 – 3:30 pm. For more information or to RSVP, contact the SLCC Community Writing Center Volunteer Coordinator at 801.957.4992 or jeremy.remy@slcc.edu.

Writing for Empowerment
In 1994, Congress transformed the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday into a national day of community service to further commemorate a man who lived his life in service to others. As a tribute to that legacy and the very real needs of our nation, the President-elect and Vice President-elect launched "Renew America Together," organizing effort on the eve of their Inauguration to engage Americans in service. This national day of service will fall on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 19, 2009. Never has it been more important to come together in shared purpose to tackle the common challenges we face, and President-elect Obama is calling on all Americans to make an ongoing commitment to our communities.
In response to this call, the SLCC Community Writing Center is asking for volunteers to rise to the challenge, and assist in bringing the message that "Everyone Can Write" to the Salt Lake community.
Volunteers are asked to attend a one-hour Day of Service orientation:
Monday, January 19, 2009
Noon to 1 PM
at the SLCC Community Writing Center
Noon to 1 PM
at the SLCC Community Writing Center
The orientation will familiarize volunteers with the methods used by the CWC to support, motivate and educate people of all abilities and educational backgrounds who want to use writing for practical needs, civic engagement and personal expression. Volunteers will also be provided with a list of non-profit organizations, government agencies, businesses, and educational institutions to contact over the Inauguration week. These contacts will be used in an effort to create ongoing Writing Partnerships to empower these organizations' clients, staff, and volunteers through workshops and individual consulting.
We are asking for your participation in meeting this challenge. If you have been a volunteer, are currently a volunteer, or are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact the SLCC Community Writing Center to RSVP for this event.
